The Neurocardiac Model offers a way to think about how meaning, stress, autonomic response, and cardiac expression can interact over time.

The Neurocardiac Model begins with a simple idea: what happens in the body is not always separate from what happens in the brain.

A stressful event is not processed as a neutral object. The brain interprets it. Meaning is assigned. That interpretation can influence autonomic activity, neurohormonal response, and physical expression.

A useful educational sequence

RTH describes the process as a sequence rather than a single event. A trigger or input is processed centrally. The autonomic nervous system responds. Neurohormonal signaling may follow. The heart and other body systems can then reflect the total response.

This framework does not mean every symptom is caused by stress. It also does not replace medical evaluation. Instead, it adds a way to think about timing, context, pattern, and recovery.

Why the sequence matters

If people only pay attention at the final stage—when symptoms are obvious—they may miss earlier opportunities to reduce load, change context, create space, or seek support.

The practical value of the model is upstream awareness. When do you notice your system changing? What types of situations are associated with that change? How long does recovery take? What helps the system return toward baseline?

Context matters

Two people can experience the same event and respond differently because their history, current load, sleep, environment, health, and interpretation differ.
