The Neurocardiac Model™

Understanding Stress, the Brain, and the Heart

An evidence-informed, hypothesis-generating translational framework for examining how cognitive-emotional processing, autonomic activation, neurohormonal response, and cardiac expression may interact over time.

The Neurocardiac Model

Five-stage stress-response sequence

  1. TriggerAn event, memory, anticipation, internal dialogue, or other meaningful input.
  2. Central ProcessingThe brain assigns meaning and evaluates salience or threat.
  3. Autonomic DysregulationSympathetic/parasympathetic balance and related regulatory processes may change.
  4. Neurohormonal ResponseStress mediators and broader physiological signaling can participate.
  5. Cardiac ExpressionHeart rate, rhythm, hemodynamic, or other measurable manifestations may occur in susceptible contexts.

Recovery and regulation are cross-cutting processes that may influence the cascade; the model does not assume every event follows one fixed path.

Autonomic timing

Autonomic changes can precede or accompany some stress-sensitive cardiac manifestations.

Observable patterns

Some physiological changes may be observable before a more pronounced manifestation, but patterns vary and are not diagnostic.

Recovery

The model distinguishes passive rest from physiological recovery and emphasizes restoration of regulatory balance.

Practical Tools

Turn awareness into something you can use.

These educational handouts translate RTH concepts into simple reflection and self-regulation tools without presenting the Neurocardiac Model as a diagnostic or treatment system.

Awareness Tool

Green / Yellow / Red System-State Reference

A simple awareness framework for recognizing relative stability, elevation, and overload before demands stack further.

For: Individuals, families, coaches, educators

Worksheet

Trigger & Total-Load Mapping Worksheet

A structured worksheet for separating an event from interpretation, body/attention changes, accumulated load, and immediate recovery needs.

For: Individuals, coaches, caregivers, educators

Starter Plan

7-Day Reset Starter Plan

A gentle one-week structure built around reducing unnecessary input, noticing patterns, and creating a repeatable recovery rhythm.

For: Adults, caregivers, leaders, athletes

Model vs. method

Related, but not interchangeable.

Neurocardiac Model™ is the conceptual and research framework.

Neurocardiac Method™ is reserved for applied methodology and future structured processes developed around the framework.
